Our answer
A few reasons, and some of them might surprise you.
- Space. One flat-bed seat takes up the room of several economy seats. The airline has to earn that space back.
- Who’s buying. A lot of business class is paid for by companies, often booked late and on fixed dates. Airlines price for that, so the published fares are high.
- Service. Lounges, better food and wine, more crew per passenger, bedding and amenity kits all cost money.
- Demand. Since 2022 more leisure travelers want to fly up front, and there are only so many seats.
- Taxes. Some countries, like the UK, charge much higher departure taxes on premium cabins.
The good news is that the price on the airline website is usually the highest price. Airlines also sell some business class seats through agencies at private fares, and they run sales when demand is lower. That’s how many people fly business class for a lot less than the headline price.
