Our answer
Short answer: on flights of about seven hours or more, especially overnight ones, it usually is, if you can get a sensible price. On a three-hour flight it usually isn’t.
What you’re really paying for on a long flight is sleep. A business class seat on almost every long-haul route now turns into a fully flat bed. You land in London, Tokyo or Johannesburg having actually slept, and you can go straight into a meeting or start your holiday instead of losing the first day.
On top of the bed you get:
- Lounge access before the flight, with food, drinks, showers and somewhere quiet to work.
- Priority check-in, security (at many airports) and boarding.
- Usually two checked bags of up to 70 lb (32 kg) each.
- Much better food, and far more space to work on a laptop.
- More flexible tickets on many fares.
Where it’s harder to justify: short daytime flights, domestic hops, or when the price is five or six times the economy fare. In those cases premium economy, or economy with a good seat, makes more sense.
The real trick is not paying the full published price. Airline websites show the highest fares. Travel agencies like ours can often get private and consolidator business class fares that are well below that for the exact same seat. When business class costs two or three times economy instead of six times, it becomes very easy to justify on a 10-hour overnight flight.
