Our answer

On long-haul flights the gap is smaller than it used to be, because good business class now has a flat bed. First class is the step above.

Business class usually gives you:

  • A seat that becomes a fully flat bed, often with direct aisle access and sometimes a door.
  • Lounge access, priority boarding and two checked bags.
  • A cabin of roughly 20 to 50 seats.

First class usually adds:

  • A much bigger private suite, sometimes with a separate seat and bed, and a door on many airlines.
  • A tiny cabin, often only 4 to 8 seats, so the service is very personal.
  • Restaurant-style dining whenever you want it, and premium champagne and caviar on some airlines.
  • Special first class lounges, and on some airlines a private car or a dedicated check-in area.

The price difference is big. First class is often 1.5 to 3 times the cost of business class on the same flight.

Also, a lot of airlines don’t sell international first class at all anymore. Delta and United, for example, make business class their top cabin. Airlines that still sell first class on some routes include British Airways, Lufthansa, Swiss, Air France, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, JAL, ANA and, on a few flights, American.

For most travelers a good business class seat is plenty. First class is a special-occasion treat.
