Our answer

Usually it’s just you. A business class ticket gets you into the lounge, not a guest, unless the person with you is also flying business class or first class that day.

There are a few ways people still get a friend or family member in:

  • You’re both in business class. If you’re traveling together and both booked in business, you each have access. This is the simplest option.
  • Airline status. Top-tier frequent flyer members can often bring a guest, sometimes even when they’re flying economy. The rules depend on the airline and the alliance.
  • Credit card lounges. Some premium credit cards include their own lounges or lounge memberships, and many allow guests, sometimes for a fee.
  • Paying for a guest pass. Some lounges sell day passes or guest entry, but many airline business class lounges don’t, especially at busy times.

Also remember lounge access is for the day you fly, usually up to about three hours before departure, and on connections on the same ticket.

If you’re traveling as a couple or a family and the lounge matters to you, ask us to price business class for both of you. With a private fare, it’s often closer to the cost of one economy upgrade than people think.
