Our answer
It’s a fair question, and you’re right to ask before you hand over thousands of dollars. Discounted business class tickets are legit when they come from a genuine agency, and there are a few easy ways to check.
How the discounts work: airlines sign contracts with travel agencies and consolidators to sell some seats at lower, private prices. The airline still fills the seat and still issues the ticket. You get a normal e-ticket with your own airline booking reference, and you can check your booking on the airline’s website and choose your seat there.
Good signs:
- You receive an airline booking reference (a six-letter code) and an e-ticket number, and you can look the booking up on the airline’s own website.
- The agency has a real phone number, a real address and people you can speak to.
- The fare rules (changes, refunds, baggage) are explained before you pay.
- You can pay by credit card, which gives you extra protection.
Warning signs:
- Being asked to pay by wire transfer, crypto or gift cards.
- Tickets “bought with someone else’s miles” or “points tickets” sold for cash. Airlines can cancel these.
- A price that is unbelievably low, such as $800 for business class to Europe.
- No booking reference until “a few days before you fly”.
