Minneapolis to Nairobi in Business Class: KLM, Air France or Lufthansa?

Last checked: September 2026.

No airline flies nonstop from Minneapolis to Nairobi, so every trip has one stop. The good news is that the stop can be easy. Three European airlines do this route well in business class: KLM through Amsterdam, Air France through Paris and Lufthansa through Frankfurt. Each one gives you a flat bed on the long flight into Nairobi.

Minneapolis to Nairobi is one of the routes we book most, and we have good business class fares with all three airlines. Here is how they compare, so you know which one suits your trip before you ask for a price.

KLM through Amsterdam: the one our customers prefer

This is usually the fastest option and our first suggestion for most people. The first leg is the Delta or KLM nonstop from Minneapolis to Amsterdam, with Delta One or KLM business class and a flat bed overnight. Then KLM takes you on to Nairobi.

We ask our passengers how their trip went, and on this route the answer is very clear. Most of them prefer to connect in Amsterdam rather than Paris. The main reason is the connection itself. Schiphol is under one roof, well signed and easy to walk, and passengers tell us the transfer and passport checks there feel quick and calm. In Paris, many found the transfer at Charles de Gaulle more stressful, with longer lines at security and passport control and more walking between terminals. After a night flight, that difference matters.

KLM flies to Nairobi on wide-body jets like the Boeing 787 and 777 with lie-flat business class seats. Kenya Airways also flies Amsterdam to Nairobi, and because it is in the same alliance, some tickets mix the two.

Air France through Paris

Air France is KLM’s sister airline, so the ticket, the alliance and the business class on board are similar. The difference is the stop. Paris Charles de Gaulle is much bigger, and as our passengers’ feedback above shows, the connection is where most people notice it. If you do fly through Paris, we always book you a longer connection time so you are not rushing.

Paris still makes sense if you want a few days in the city on the way, or if the Amsterdam flight on your date is full or much more expensive. Air France’s service on board is excellent, and the food is a real strength.

Lufthansa through Frankfurt

Lufthansa flies Frankfurt to Nairobi every day. The flight leaves Frankfurt late in the morning and lands in Nairobi in the evening, around 8:30pm local time. On the way home it leaves Nairobi late at night and reaches Frankfurt early the next morning, so you can sleep on the long flight in both directions.

From Minneapolis, the first flight is either a seasonal nonstop on Discover Airlines, which is part of the Lufthansa Group, or a connection through another US hub. Lufthansa is also bringing in its new Allegris business class on some aircraft. Choose Lufthansa if you collect United or other Star Alliance miles, or if its times suit you better.

Baggage in business class

All three airlines usually allow two checked bags of up to 32 kg (70 lb) each in business class, plus cabin bags. Rules differ slightly by airline and fare, so check your own ticket. A tip if you are going on safari: many small bush planes to the camps allow only about 15 kg in a soft bag. Pack a soft duffel inside your suitcase and leave the big case at your Nairobi hotel.

Passing through Europe: do you need to clear immigration?

If Amsterdam, Paris or Frankfurt is only a connection on a single ticket, you normally stay in the international part of the airport and do not enter Europe. You may still go through a transfer security check and sometimes a passport check before your Nairobi gate, and this is where airports differ most. It is the main reason our passengers rate Amsterdam higher. If you stop over for a night or longer, you go through Schengen passport control like any visitor, including the EU’s new fingerprint and photo registration.

Entry rules for Kenya

  • eTA: US passport holders need an Electronic Travel Authorisation before flying. Apply only on the Kenyan government’s official eTA website, and do it well before your trip. Other sites charge extra for the same form.
  • Passport: make sure it is valid for at least six months after you arrive and has blank pages.
  • Health: check the current vaccination advice from the CDC and your doctor well before you go, especially if you are going on safari.

Arriving in Nairobi

You land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO). Most flights from Europe arrive in the evening. Book your hotel transfer before you fly instead of looking for a ride after a long trip; most good hotels and safari companies will meet you at arrivals. If your safari starts the next morning, stay near the airport or in Karen, which is closer to Wilson Airport, where many safari flights leave from.

When to go and when to book

  • July to October is the main safari season, and the Great Migration usually reaches the Maasai Mara in these months. Business class sells out early, so book months ahead if you can.
  • Mid-December to early January is busy with holiday and family travel.
  • April and May are the long rains. Fares and lodges are cheaper and the country is green.
  • Be flexible by a day or two and let us check all three airlines. The same dates can be priced very differently on KLM, Air France and Lufthansa.

Quick answers

Is there a direct flight from Minneapolis to Nairobi?

No. The best options have one stop in Amsterdam, Paris or Frankfurt, and the whole trip takes roughly 16 to 18 hours.

Is it better to connect in Amsterdam or Paris?

For most travelers, Amsterdam. It is usually faster, and our passengers consistently say the connection and passport checks at Schiphol are easier than at Paris Charles de Gaulle.

Which is the quickest business class route?

Delta or KLM to Amsterdam, then KLM to Nairobi, at around 16 hours 20 minutes on a good connection.

Can I earn Delta SkyMiles on this trip?
